Nikolausmarkt 2018

Personal report by David Packer, chairman of the Heusenstamm Friendship Circle.

The Nikolausmarkt went very well. It was well attended, with a festive atmosphere, and most of our provisions were sold in the two days. The new team is doing a good job.

Our group consisted of Howard Rogers (ex Mayor) (who made a good speech at the international Abendessen on the Saturday, and presented Herr Öztas with a gift), Stuart Murray and daughter, Marylis (who did a stint on the stand), and me. On the Friday we visited Frankfurt, which is renovating its historic and cultural centre, and lunched with a couple of friends of the Murrays , Angela and Walter Schäfer. Angela, who is English, gave a talk recently to the Freundschaftskreis about the Isle of Wight.

As usual, the market opened on the Saturday afternoon and the Adventslieder concert given by the evangelische Kantorei took place in St Cäcilia Church. I was able to have a few brief words with Rüdiger, Dorothea and others. They are looking forward to next year's joint concerts and are well into rehearsals for the Brahms Requiem.

On the Sunday morning Stuart and Marylis were taken to see the Leather Museum in Offenbach. In the afternoon were the usual two sessions of English carols, which Rosie Hippe is normally in charge of. Unfortunately she was not able to do so this time, because she is seriously ill at home, so, by prior arrangement with Barbara von Knorre I stood in for her. The final event was the Abendessen for us, this time in the Da Salvatore Italian restaurant opposite St Cäcilia, a more intimate setting, which added to the conviviality. Herren Öztas, Hajdu and Sabary (the Pastor of the evangelische Kirche) were among the guests.

The Nikolausmarkt provides a showcase for twinning and we felt that this year's event was particularly successful. The market brings people together and creates a strong feel-good factor. As ever, our friends overwhelmed us with their hospitality. Kurt and Ute Strubel-Heubeck were particularly helpful.
