Schools’ exchanges: The first leg, in Tonbridge, of another successful exchange between the Judd School and the Adolf Reichwein Gymnasium took place in March this year, with a reception hosted by our Mayor at the Castle. The Judd students will be in Heusenstamm from 6 to 15 June.

The link between the Slade School and the Matthias-Claudius-Schule in Rembrücken continues to develop.

The Haysden Volunteer Group has turned the Heusenstamm Friendship Wood into a bluebell wood by planting 1000s of native bluebell bulbs. The Circle has contributed to this project by providing funding for 2000 bulbs, in the hope that it will encourage more people to visit. Come April, it should be a blaze of colour!

The flower border around the Heusenstamm Relic near Tonbridge Castle is creating a lot of interest from passersby. The Relic, a stone from the old castle in Heusenstamm, was presented to Tonbridge in 1994 on the 10th anniversary of the twinning link. After an initial consultation between Alison Marsden, of Gardening by Design, Debi Simpson of Tonbridge Community Gardeners (TCG) and Eileen Best and Suzannah Niklas of HFC, the garden was laid out and planted by members of TCG, together with pupils of Sevenoaks School’s Voluntary Service Unit and members of HFC. We recently received a donation from the Tonbridge Lions for its upkeep, which has enabled us to hire a professional gardener, who took over the care of the garden from our original volunteers in the autumn of 2017. Dates for your diary:

16 Jun 2019 - Triennial choir exchange between the Tonbridge Philharmonic Society and the Evangelische Kantorei in Heusenstamm. The concert, which included Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem (sung in German) took place in Tonbridge on 30 March and will be repeated in Heusenstamm on 16 June. Well worth supporting!

20 Jul 2019 - English Picnic in Heusenstamm, at the Bannturm. At one of these gatherings we were presented with our Bannturm Relic, gracing the area in front of Tonbridge Castle and planted with lovely seasonal flowers, year round. Members would be warmly welcomed at this informal gathering, and it is a lovely time of year to visit Heusenstamm, so if you have not yet been, please consider going for the weekend. Contact David for help with making your arrangements if you have not been before.

8 Sep 2019 - Farmers' Market, Tonbridge. We shall again have a stall setting out the aims and pleasures of twinning, so do come and support us and bring your friends.

4 - 8 June 2020: the next joint holiday will be in 2020, in the Isle of Wight. The Heusenstamm group will arrive on Thursday 4th, and a Dinner for all members will take place at the Vauxhall Inn that evening. We will depart from there by coach on Friday morning, leaving cars in the Vauxhall car park over the weekend. On our return journey - Monday - we will stop briefly at Heathrow to say farewell to our friends as they return to Heusenstamm. All members should have received details of the itinerary and costs. Places for this holiday are still available, but limited, so don't delay your booking.
