Schools’ exchanges: A group of 30 Judd pupils visited Heusenstamm in May (13th-15th) and the exchange visit to Tonbridge took place in July (1st-10th). A link has been established between the Slade School and the Matthias-Claudius-Schule in Rembrücken.
Work has started on the flower border around the Heusenstamm Relic near Tonbridge Castle. The Relic, a stone from the old castle in Heusenstamm, was presented to Tonbridge in 1994 on the 10th anniversary of the twinning link. There was an initial consultation between Alison Marsden, of Gardening by Design, Debi Simpson of Tonbridge Community Gardeners (TCG) and Eileen Best and Suzannah Niklas of HFC. Members of TCG, together with pupils of Sevenoaks School’s Voluntary Service Unit are doing the actual work, aided by a teacher and members of HFC. On 21 August, David and Dorothy Packer represented the Circle - as spectators - at the Bat and Trap World Cup at Capel Village hall. They found the new experience very enjoyable. The game is typically English, predating cricket and going back for more than 300 years. Tonbridge Nomads are the present World Cup holders and their Team Captain, Norman Walke said 'It is a good friendly game that is played by people at the local pub, where they have a good laugh with everyone.' The basic rules are simple, and teams of six players, which can be mixed and of all ages, make it a very social game. Certainly the atmosphere and repartee at Capel made it a very entertaining day, and money was raised for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. David had tried to encourage a team to come from Heusenstamm and hopes for better luck next year.
On 11 September the Circle took a stand at the monthly Farmers' Market in Tonbridge. It turned out to be a glorious summer's day and the market was very busy. Our volunteers on the stand were able to talk to many people who displayed an interest in Heusenstamm and provide them with information from the large amount of material - books, photos, maps, brochures, CDs and DVDs - which we have accumulated over the years. Local Societies, such as the Tonbridge Horticultural Society, Tonbridge Juddians and the Hartley Morris Men came to talk to us as well as individuals, and we hope to involve them in our future contacts with Heusenstamm. If we can also attract more members to join the Circle, our participation in the Market, which cost us nothing, will have proved worthwhile. Please go to our Facebook page for comments and photographs.
Further dates for your diary: 8th to 12th June 2017 - Joint holiday with Freundschaftskreis in Germany. We will as usual spend one night with hosts in Heusenstamm before making our way, with members of the German Circle, to Trier and its surroundings in the Moselle region, spending 3 nights in a hotel.
